Each year I put together a group to hunt North Central Texas Rio Grande gobblers. In 2012 the hunt will take place the opening 3 days of the Texas season followed by a 2nd group with a day between hunts. The Texas opener will be March 31st. On this hunt as a bonus you may take one wild hog at no extra cost and unlimited predators.
The Hunt: Our hunt takes place on 12,000 private acres. This is a semi-guided hunt. You will be shown the ranch, but you are your own guide. We've hunted this ranch for several years and know everything needed to get hunters pointed in the right direction. Some glass scouting will be done before we arrive along with confirming roost locations. Archery or Shotguns can be used on this hunt. There is a 2 bird limit on this hunt. If you agree to not kill jakes you may also harvest a wild hog. You may kill as many predators as opportunity allows. In past years this hunt has been 100% shot opportunity and In 2010 we seen 100% success.
There is an abundance of turkey on this ranch and it's not uncommon to have 12-20 gobblers roosted together. Rio Grande birds cover a lot of ground during the day and in many cases you have to be mobile and willing to move around to stay in front of the birds. If that's not your game there is more than enough opportunity to sit tight and wait birds out as they frequent food plots or strut zones throughout the day. There has never been a shortage of gobbling or bird activity on this hunt. You can stay on birds from fly down to fly up. In Texas you can kill 2 birds in 1 day, so if you have the opportunity you can kill your birds on day 1 and hog or predator hunt the remaining time.
Hunt Dates: 1st Hunt: March 31-April 2. 2nd Hunt: April 4-6th, 2012. Cost: $700 Includes Lodging. We have a full service kitchen in the lodge. A grocery order will be made and the cost split 8 ways. The group will share duties preparing meals and cleaning up.
Licenses: $126.
Transportation: From Western Kentucky the drive is approximately 14 hours. If you want to fly, DFW or Witchita Falls will put you within a couple hours drive. I will be making the drive and can offer a ride for up to 3 hunters to share expense.
Location: The hunt takes place in North Central Texas approximately 20 miles north of Throckmorton. The Ranch is made up of Mesquite flats, canyons, large pasture, river and creek bottoms. Payment: $350 deposit due Now. $350 due by February 20th, 2012 to Western Kentucky Outdoors. If you have any questions please feel free to call or send me an email.
